Adrenal Burnout: Its devastating Impact on Your Health

Adrenal Burnout: A Common Modern Day Syndrome

Adrenal Burnout (also sometimes referred to as adrenal dysfunction or adrenal fatigue) is a term we hear a lot about today.  While many doctors don’t recognize adrenal burnout as a disease, naturopaths and holistic therapists do.  Typically, Naturopaths may see clients presenting with a myriad of seemingly-unexplained or unconnected symptoms that place enormous burden on their quality of life.  For this reason, Naturopaths recognize Adrenal Burnout as a serious modern day syndrome.

“The current model of success is to drive ourselves into the ground by working ourselves to
the point of exhaustion and wearing burn-out as a badge of honour –- a view based on a
masculine notion which never did and never will serve us” – Rita Balshaw.

What is Adrenal Burnout?

According to Fawne Hanson, author of The Adrenal Fatigue Solution, Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome is “a group of diverse symptoms that present due to the under-functioning and depletion of key neurotransmitters and hormones produced by the adrenal glands, HPA axis, thyroid gland and often reproductive glands”

The adrenal glands are like small batteries that sit on top of each kidney. They control
of our stress response and our energy levels. When the adrenal glands are depleted of energy,
this causes multiple systems in our body to diminish in function and capacity. These systems include our endocrine (hormonal) system, the metabolic and immune systems.

When it comes to stress, it seems that women consistently top the stress-related charts.   Women have shown to display more physical symptoms as a result of stress than men. They are also known to have the highest rates of prolonged stress.

Adrenal burnout is typically the result of chronic and prolonged physical or emotional stress. Over time, this can result in symptoms like a weakened immune system, low energy levels, a reduced ability to handle stressful situations. It can also lead to out of control cravings for salty or sugary foods.

Symptoms of Adrenal Burnout

Adrenal burnout leads to a type of hypervigilance and, this in turn, causes disruption to the cortisol rhythm.
While this disruption affects our energy levels, it can leave us feeling ‘wired and tired’ and highly strung out. In addition, adrenal burnout can lead to insomnia and generally poor sleep patterns.  This is one of the by-products of adrenal burnout, creating a never-ending cycle of fatigue. Other symptoms of adrenal burnout can also include:

  • poor focus and concentration,
  • weight gain,
  • lack of self-control or willpower,
  • mood swings,
  • poor immune function,
  • poor mental clarity and memory,
  • reduced sex drive and
  • increased pain levels.

Root Causes of Adrenal Dysfunction

  • Chronic emotional and mental stress
  • Food triggers, blood sugar imbalances and nutritional insufficiency
  • Gut imbalances
  • Toxic overload
  • Immune disruption and stealth infections
  • Inadequate sleep
  • Poor diet (lack of nutrients/nutrient deficiencies)
  • Viral infections
  • Prolonged dehydration
  • Drug and/or alcohol abuse
  • Excessive coffee and other stimulant consumption
  • Substances and/or prescription medication abuse.

When adrenal exhaustion occurs, the most important phase is restoring the connection to your natural bodily rhythm.   Learning to recognize when you’re stressed and turning it around is crucial to getting and staying out of adrenal dysfunction.
